Big of the Year 2017 Announced
Mentors celebrate at this special Annual BIG Appreciation Social
for January Mentor Month
Charlotte -- January 19 2017 -- It was an inspiring night for January National Mentor Month,
as Big Brothers Big Sisters, the national leader in mentoring, celebrated with
many of its mentors here in the Charlotte community. At Suite in the
Epicenter, mentors mingled with each other and their Big Brothers Big Sisters
liaisons to catch up on the lives of themselves and their "Littles"
It was a great opportunity
to honor and recognize the role of “Bigs” – what it means to be a mentor and
the impact mentors feel they have had. “Our mentors are the heart of Big Brothers Big
Sisters. Each of them not only impacts a child’s life today, but
helps transform their potential for tomorrow,” shares Donna Dunlap, CEO.
One mentor, Jonathan,
described his experience this way "I meet with my Little every week.
He is in his teen years now, and I can tell he needs me. I can see
that I have shifted his path a little, and I am excited to see where he goes
Seven nominees were
recognized and one particular mentor was presented as Mentor of the Year for
Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central Carolinas.
"You may not
know it today, but that Little (mentee) will help break the cycle of poverty in
their home environment" said Donna Dunlap, CEO, in her remarks to the
Winner this year was Tyrell
Brown, nominated by his Little Jaden. Mom is a working mother taking care of
her family, and seeking a strong male role model for Tyrell. Tyrell is
always only a phone call away, and has focused on the value of education and
humility. Big Brother Tyrell is very intentional about the outings he and
Little Brother Jaden do together. They have consistently spent their past five
years volunteering and giving back to the community together.
As a surprise to winning
Mentor Tyrell, Jaden's mom spoke. "You will forever be in our lives.
There is an unbreakable bond with all of us. We love you."
Joseph Butler, Senior
Director Community Engagement, closed out "Thank you all. Because of
you, we have served children in this community for 45 years. Because of
you, we served over 1500 children this past year. Because of you, we will
be realizing a dream of expanding to serve South Carolina in 2017."
